Wool is measured in "microns", which is a unit of measurement that denotes the diameter of the wool fiber in the yarn, and the lower the number, the finer the wool and less itchy. Wool with a micron count above 28 tends to itch, whereas wool with a micron count below 28 does not itch. Merino wool is a perfect material for children with delicate and sensitive skin, as the micron number is between 17.5 and 24.
Merino wool is temperature regulating and water absorbent. Merino wool consists of very fine and curled fibers that create insulating air pockets. The wool naturally contains lanolin, which combines with the skin's moisture and salts (or urine) and saponifies, a process that causes sweat odors to disappear. We recommend hanging the wool out for airing or over the back of a chair rather than washing, as long as the clothes have not been ordered.
